The Office of the State Fire Marshal has announced that this certification is “highly recommended” to all departments in Illinois. The training is designed to provide fire service personnel with basic knowledge and skills to safely perform fire service vehicle operations as defined by NFPA 1002 (1998) and NFPA 1451 (2002).

After the NIPSTA program, students must complete the OSFM driving portion of the program, written exam, and perform eight additional hours of behind-the-wheel training at their local department in order to receive the State certification.
