Hazardous Materials- First Responder Operations
March 5-9, 2018

A collaborative partnership between the Cook County Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (CCDHSEM) and NIPSTA supports this five (5) day, Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) Illinois state certified program.  

The tuition for this course is generally supported through a grant. However, grant funding may be withdrawn at any time. Students will be notified immediately if grant funding is eliminated.

This course provides firefighters with the basic skills needed to evaluate and work defensively at an incident involving the release of hazardous materials/WMD.  The NIPSTA program is a hands-on, practical-oriented course in which students will operate in Level B suits to meter and control product and flow foam, set up decontamination, plus other techniques in simulated hazardous scenarios.


Course Objectives:

Learn and apply the Five Step Process to resolve a hazardous materials incident

Learning basic hazards and risk-assessment techniques

Selecting and using proper personal protective equipment (PPE)

Performing basic control, containment and confinement operations

Understanding various types of CBRNE and WMD events

Following standard operating guidelines and termination procedures

*Course objectives are based off of the current NFPA 472: Standard for Competence of Responders to hazardous materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents (Operations level).


Student Requirements

Students are required to attend all sessions in their duty work uniform and provide turnout gear that is NFPA compliant.  The required equipment includes coat, pants, hood, boots, gloves, helmet w/ chinstrap, ear flaps, and face shield or goggles.  Students must also provide SCBA harness, a fit-tested face piece, two (2) SCBA cylinders with hydrostatic test dates that do not expire prior to the dates of the scheduled program, a flashlight, work gloves or extrication gloves, work safety glasses, and passport name tags.

Students who register and are accepted into this course thirty (30) days prior to the beginning of the course are eligible to sit for the OSFM examination, held on the final day of the course.

Lunch is not included. 

Cancellation Policy:  Notice of cancellation  must be received in writing by NIPSTA at least two (2) weeks prior to the first day of the scheduled training program.  Substitute requests will not be accepted.

If notice of cancellation is not received by NIPSTA before the first day of the scheduled training program, then 100% of the tuition fee shall be due and payable to NIPSTA.

NIPSTA reserves the right to cancel a course.  Notice of cancellation will be provided to students at least seven (7) days prior to the first day of the program.  Cancellations with less than seven (7) days" notice will only be in the event of an emergency.
